We present to you the new KARBUN NAVY STRENGTH - the first Croatian Navy strength gin, Alk. 58.5% vol.
Made from wild brinjal, hand-picked from the slopes of Ćićarija. It is stored in special small barrels, filtered and served with activated charcoal. The Navy strength mark is a guarantee of its strength (58.5% alcohol), which you will not have to test with gunpowder, as sailors used to do.
The story behind what we know today as Navy strength gin began during the first gin boom in the 18th century.
The Royal Navy stipulated that there must be a certain amount of gin on board every ship while sailing on the high seas. Gin was supposed to be on board to help fight the diseases that were common.
However, some of the ship's officers were suspicious of gin, especially since the quality varied so much from town to town and they felt it was excessively watered down.
In order to test gin of acceptable quality, it was tested by igniting a mixture of alcohol and gunpowder. If it burned with a clear flame, it was proof that the alcoholic drink was up to standards (at least 57% alcohol in today's terms). Failure to burn or a smoky flame are signs that the drink is below the required strength.
